A677
Preston New Road

One of the routes severely affected by the opening of the M65 in 1997, the A677 found itself being truncated by a significant amount. Originally it ran from the A680 in the middle of Haslingden to the A59 at Samlesbury, but post M65 it now runs from Blackburn Town Centre to Samlesbury. This was not immediately the case, as the creation of Blackburn's inner ring road in 2001 truncated even more of the A677 - it had originally ended on the A679 at the Toll Bar junction east of Audley, close to Intack.

The existing portion of the A677 is a road of two halves, in Blackburn it forms the leafy Preston New Road and runs westwards on the alignment of an old turnpike era road (the original route to Preston being via what is today the A674), and crosses the A6119 at the town's boundary. From here it shows how it used to be a trunk route, albeit one with a 50mph speed restriction since the late 1980s after a series of unfortunate road accidents along the road.

However, the road does run through some slightly built up areas, particularly where it intersects Branch Road at Mellor Brook. The road then eventually meets the A59, passing south of Samlesbury Aerodrome, and becomes part of the dualled A59 leading to the M6.

A 50mph speed limit begins here and remains with the road until the junction with the A6119 at Yew Tree.

One of the twistier sections of the A677 that has seen numerous accidents.

The junction here is for Samlesbury Bottoms, which is a well hidden hamlet tucked away below the A677.

Passing Samlesbury Aerodrome, the A677 shows its old trunk road credentials in that it is actually a wide alignment through the south western fringes of the Ribble Valley.

The turning for Branch Road is in the middle of Mellor Brook and has been considered a bit of an accident blackspot in the past.

A speed camera enforces the speed limit east of Mellor Brook. One would've expected this to be closer to the built up area rather than after it.

Passing the turning for Mellor there is an ornate bus stop on the A677. Another sharp bend exists.

The junction with the A6119 shows where through traffic is expected to go - through to the M65 at Whitebirk.

A very old AA service phone is still in situ just before the junction - although whether it works is another question entirely.

This section of the A677 originally had a 40mph speed limit but this was reduced to 30 in the early 21st Century.

Another speed camera enforces the 30mph speed limit outside of Beardwood Hospital.

After Revidge Crossroads, the mini roundabout with the B6447 appears.

The other part of the Lowton St Mary's junction. Golborne is to the right.

Passing through the suburbs of Blackburn, the A677 passes along the north of the incredibly steep ridge that the town is built on.

A third speed camera enforces the speed limit in this direction.

The junction with Montague Street here was the temporary route of the inner ring road until the completion of the Barbara Castle Way extension in June 2003.

Outside of Corporation Park the A677 has been modified to provide more of a gateway to the town.

And finally, at the next crossroads, with Barbara Castle Way, the A677 now ends. In the distance the Town Hall extension dominates the Blackburn skyline.
