Links to Other Websites

The following links are related to roads and street furniture, or have material related to the subject.

Local Interest

Cottontown
Nick Harling's website concentrates on the history of Blackburn, from its early beginnings right through to the present day - also is home to a lot of archive material that the town has. Well worth a read, and contains many excellent road photos of Blackburn/Darwen.

East Lancashire.com
Photographs of various developments in Blackburn/Darwen and the surrounding area.

North West Streetlighting
Russell Oakes presents a streetlight enthusiast site focused on the North West.

Lancashire Historic Highways
Lancashire County Council's website contains information on the region's motorways and an interesting article on the A580 East Lancashire Road.

SpeedLIMIT
Peter Edwardson writes about what is going wrong with road safety and promotes more logical and reasoned solutions to the problem.

Route 6
Ian Wilson's site is full of excellent observations about the development of the M6 and A6 corridors throughout the country, but the Lancashire section is well worth a visit.

National Interest

CBRD
Chris Marshall's site features the legendary Motorway Database, original motorways plans, simulators, and more roads stuff than you can shake a finger-post at.

UK Roads
Paul Berry's website, with a list of lost motorways, ring roads, and an extension of the M18...

The SABRE Community
The SABRE Community is the only online community that discusses roads in Britain as its core subject. The people are friendly, the chats are friendly (and I help run them), and there's plenty of banter on the site!

Pathetic Motorways
Pathetic Motorways is run by Steven Jukes, and features the lesser motorways of the UK. Well worth a look if you'd like to read photo-documentaries of the A6144(M) or the M898, or maybe even the Walton Summit Motorway.

English Street Lighting
Mike Barford's collection of lights and lanterns, complete with old light photos. Very Derby-centric, but excellent material and resources for any street light fanatic.

Major Roads of Great Britain
Richard Green owns what is probably the oldest UK roads website on the web. It's entirely text based, but with plenty of humour and interesting articles.

Ben's Roads
Ben Jenkinson, of the Teeside area, has a fledgling roads site with information on service areas and such like.

The Motorway Archive
Peter Hewitt's archive explains the motorway network's construction from start to end - fantastic stuff - Peter himself worked on the Preston Bypass in the late 1950s, and is therefore a part of road history forever.

Transport Campaigns

The ABD
The Association of British Drivers fights for motorists rights, and an end to speed camera 'abuse' - ie, revenue generation. Controversial organisation, but some good points raised in the site.

Transport 2000
Transport 2000 campaign for better public transport, but sadly, at the cost of other road users. Again, a controversial site with some twaddle, but generally sensible points. The exact opposite of the ABD when it comes to speed cameras, though.

Learn-2-Live
Promotes the idea that new drivers should have motorway lessons before they should be allowed onto a motorway - also shows the results of bad motorway driving...
