Picturing the Past

Blackburn has obviously changed through the decades, but the question on most people's minds is how much?

Anyone who knows the town will perhaps be aware that in 1965 the town was totally decimated to build the new Shopping Centre. I am not going to focus on those (yet!), but I am focusing on some roads related photos. The archive photos remain property of Cottontown, but I am using them in accordance with their reproduction guidelines.

Contemporary photographs taken between 2003 and 2006.

Contemporary Photograph

Ainsworth Street radically changed in 1995 when it was closed to through traffic and turned into a bus station. The left hand photo dates to approx. 1972.

Copy Nook in the 1980s. Anyone who is familiar with the song "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy may recognise the scene on the left - it was used in the music video for the song.

Darwen Street now sports a central reservation and speed table to slow traffic down as it enters the town. The left hand photo dates from the 1980s.

The sign here is now gone, but it is an excellent comparison regardless. Left photo dates to the 1980s.

Darwen Street again sporting its new central reservation. Notice how the two signs in the 1980s photo on the left are now gone.

The brewery in the left (1970s) photo was demolished to make way for Morrisons in 1988. Notice the hideous sign as well!

Lots of changes here. The buildings are gone, there are new signals, and the cobbles have long since been replaced. Left hand photo dates to the 1970s.

Another one for signage fans, this example on Limbrick. Barbara Castle Way changed this area forever in 1989. The left photo dates to the 1970s.

Penny Street is virtually unchanged, apart from the modern traffic signal, taxi rank, and sleeved column. Left photo dates from 1966.

Plenty of changes here from 1955 when the left photo was taken. The roundabout is sadly no more.

Yet again, spot the differences between 1955 and 2006. The lighting columns in the left hand photo still survive though!

Same view, but the left photo dates to the 1980s. The pub is gone and so is the brewery. Same streetlamps though!

The foreground is completely changed since 1968!

What is worth noting here is that Sudell Cross has been a roundabout, then a traffic signal, and until April 2006 it was a roundabout again. Spot the streetlights! Left photo from the 1980s.

Sudell Cross again. The traffic light junction worked best, but when Barbara Castle Way opened it rendered it redundant so it was replaced. Left photo from the 1970s.
