A6078: Copy Nook Junction

These photos were taken in January 2004 whilst the improvements at Copy Nook were still not completed. The finished scheme involved making the road wider by putting a second bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as well as adding a bus lane with priority signals at the end of the scheme. These photos do not show the completed widening of the approach road from the now A678 (former A679) into town.

Just leaving Eanam Roundabout and there is a cycle lane almost instantly, which soon widens out into a bus lane.

Look closely and the old road markings are still visible here. This small stretch wasn't widened, instead the lanes were moved around.

This used to be a turning point for Manner Sutton Street, which has since been closed. Note again the old markings on the now anti-clockwise lanes.

This section of road was modified to prevent access to the A6078 without creating two cul-de-sacs. The road loops around back into Daisyfield.

The two bridges here are side by side. This junction was vastly improved from its original configuration but still suffers routine congestion.

Various modifications to the one-way system were installed at this point too. This street leads into Daisyfield, via Fort Street industrial estate.

The signage was installed in 2004 as the works progressed. Before this, the junction was not signposted at all.

The crossroads does not allow any turns whatsoever from this direction.

The signage was changed to read A678 when the A6078 was brought into use in 2005.

There is evidence of the original road layout, where the red surfacing denoted a former bus stop.

The set of traffic lights in the background replaced a Give Way sign layout. The signs were eventually removed to prevent the conflict.

There are plenty of signals around this junction. In the distance is the Bus Gate.

It seems strange that four, rather than two posts were used here.

This area was still being widened as late as June 2004. It is now complete.

Here the wide alignment of the road is visible - had the 1974 plans come into fruition, this would now be a motorway alignment.

Another restrictive junction with signage that was later corrected to show the new numbering scheme.

Signals controlling the original Give Way junction.

Higher Barn Street had redundant signs for a while, these too were finally removed.

Sample of an Orbital Route sign - which has since been amended to show the new road numbers.
